Better, Brighter Daycare Center

Lydia Lubaton, Immediate Past President (IPP) of the Rotary Club of Metro Zamboanga, observed that the daycare center in Mercedes Village, a depressed area in Zamboanga City, was in such a bad condition already inimical to the safety of the young children. She and UAP IPP Ramil Marba approached the United Architects of the Philippines (UAP) Zamboanga Chavacano Chapter to seek help in building a new daycare center, to which the latter said yes. The architects provided the designs and plans. Davies Paints contributed lively colors of assorted paints to give the learning facility a jubilant ambiance.

On August 5, 2018, IPP Lubaton, UAP/Rotarian IPP Marba, UAP President Benjamin Panganiban Jr., and UAP Zamboanga Chapter President Mark Jerome Gandarosa formally opened the completed Mercedes Child Development Center. In attendance were representatives of the DSWD and local barangay officials—and, of course, the beneficiaries from the depressed community. It was a heartwarming occasion as the young children pranced around, and the parents shed tears of joy. The center is a disaster-resilient structure of indigenous materials in the locality, well-ventilated, and with amenities that far exceed those of the adjacent old daycare center. The replaced structure will be used for training parents in coordination with TESDA and the DSWD. The world changed for the better in this tiny part of Zamboanga where Rotarians and architects combined their time, talent, and resources to build a beautiful venue for child care. —Report of IPP Lydia DJ Lubaton
