The Rotary Club of Bongao District 3850 celebrates the International Literacy Day and National Literacy Month at the Budbud Primary School in Panglima Sugala Municipality, Province of Tawi-Tawi.

As part of its continuing campaign to serve to change lives one community at a time, the Rotary Club of Bongao District 3850 Tawi-Tawi Province conducted its first ever literacy cum environmental advocacy, and community outreach program at Budbud Primary School in Panglima Sugala Municipality on September 12, 2021. The event would have not been possible without the help of partners and supporters in the community including the MSU-TCTO OCEanES, ROTARACT, Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE BARMM) and Department of Education BARMM, Marine Battalion Landing Team (MBLT) 1 and 12, the Local Government of Panglima Sugala. The groups were led by Mayor Nurbert Sahali, Barangay Kulape, Mahardika Institute of Technology Education Department and the Volunteer Teachers from various Colleges in Tawi-Tawi.

This is part of its continuing campaign to inform and educate communities on the importance of environmental conservation and preservation, nurture communities in the margins on the importance of education for improved lives, promote community volunteerism, establish lifelong partnerships with the military on civic military operations in peace building and conflict resolution as well as strengthen partnerships with other civic movers on the ground.

The Rotarians of Tawi-Tawi, under the active support of its current President, Surahaida “Ensie” L. Immak, held a fun-filled, life changing outreach programs to the school children and their parents at Budbud Primary School in Barangay Kulape, Panglima Sugala.

Volunteer teachers led the reading and storytelling activities to school children, while Rotarians—who are specializing in education, environmental conservation, dental health and hygiene—shared their skills and expertise in educating the community on the importance of guidance and support in blended learning, proper hand-washing, basic hygiene and disease prevention, and dental care for infants, children and adults. Rotary’s partner, the marines of the MBLT 1 and 12, assisted in the distribution of sacks of rice, gave free haircuts, checked the Blood Pressure of the community, and provided transportation for the volunteer teachers. The local government of Panglima Sugala provided the healthy merienda of arrozcaldo with malunggay (moringa leaves) and carrots served in reusable bowls for all the children present. Lunch of “binalot” rice and chicken adobo were served in banana leaves for the parents. No single use plastic was used to serve the food and water.

In closing, parlor games were held to bring joy and smiles to the school children who have been missing their in-person classes. Finally, sacks of rice were distributed to each family courtesy of Tabang BARMM. The school children also received hygiene kits, assortment of toys and school materials, shoes, and food packs courtesy of various donors.
