Multi-sectoral collaboration | Finance, conservation, and policy for the environment | Institutional interventions

In this Plenary Keynote, we will highlight the experiences of leaders from three different, globally-renowned institutions working in diverse areas, but united by the goal of finding the best, large-scale approaches to climate action. By working in finance and investment, global policy, and environmental conservation, our speakers will demonstrate how multi-pronged innovation and whole-of-society collaboration can help us achieve a net-zero world.

Speakers

Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren

(South Korea)

Green Climate Fund

Financing the Climate: Lessons from the Green Fund

Our first speaker, Dr. Oyun Sanjaasuren, is with the South Korea-based Green Climate Fund. Dr. Sanjaasuren will share real-life examples of how innovation in different sectors has created environmental benefits and supported lifestyle shifts, without sacrificing profits. In pointing to these examples, Dr. Sanjaasuren emphasizes the need for global, multi-sectoral action, including on the part of business — a blended model that the Green Climate Fund itself practices in working with other financial institutions and governments to design and fund effective climate projects.

Dr. James Deutsch

(USA)

Rainforest Trust

Investing in Our Rainforests

Next, Dr. James Deutsch will relate his experience as CEO of the Rainforest Trust, a nonprofit working towards large-scale conservation of rainforests and the protection of endangered species. With the Trust’s unique approach to environmental investment, Dr. Deutsch shall highlight the importance of environmental stewardship and how local communities and organizations can be mobilized to become effective allies and custodians of critical habitats and ecosystems – a call to action that all Rotarians should answer.

Dr. Janet Kabeberi-Macharia

Programs Committee Chair, Rotary District 9212
(Kenya)

United Nations Environment Programme

Building Sustainable & Equitable Use of the Environment in the Asia-Pacific Region

Our final speaker is an expert in gender and social safeguards, working in the United Nations. Dr. Janet Kabeberi-Macharia will draw from her work in designing climate interventions and understanding the gender-differentiated impact of climate change, with women and the youth emerging as more vulnerable sectors. Dr. Kabeberi-Macharia will share practical ways to prevent environmental degradation, issuing a call to action grounded in the work being done by Rotary Clubs. In this way, she emphasizes how we should all find ways of living and working that can sustain an equitable future for all.
