End Dengue Now by RCSPS and RCPC

Rotary’s top priority is the eradication of polio… and we are close to ending polio now.

And since December is the Disease Prevention and Treatment Month of Rotary International, the Rotary Club of San Pedro South (RCSPS) and Rotary Club of Pinamalayan Central (RCPC) have been inspiring the community members to “End Dengue Now” as well.

With recent reports from the World Health Organization (WHO), Dengue continues to have wide-ranging impacts. In fact, mosquito-borne pathogens kill more than half a million people a year and make hundreds of thousands of people sick.

On April 2020, RCSPS had already pledged their support to act as champions for the fight against malaria. “Bug Off Malaria” is a campaign that aims to raise community safety and awareness.

And on December 2020, Transforming President (TP) Guia Lopez de Leon of RCSPS and TP Ghie Larracas of the RCPC are both committed to win this fight against Dengue.

To prevent public health risk associated with mosquitoes, insect repellents, mosquito coils and some hygiene kits are being distributed for free by TP Guia and TP Ghie. This is timely and relevant since most submerged areas (due to successive typhoons) are conducive to be the breeding ground of mosquitoes.

TRIVIA: Mosquito coils work in one of two ways. Those that contain insecticides will kill (or at least “knock down”) mosquitoes, while those that contain aromatic substances (such as citronella) will repel mosquitoes or reduce the likelihood they’ll bite. And it wasn’t until the early 1900s that the distinctively shaped mosquito coil was born. Thanks to Japanese entrepreneurs Eiichiro and Yuki Ueyama and their katori senk (mosquito-killing incense).

Dengue fever, together with associated dengue haemorrhagic fever (DHF), is the most crucial vector-borne viral disease affecting humans. The urban yellow fever mosquito, also known as Aedes aegypti, is the principal dengue-carrying vector. Aedes albopictus is another known vector.

Finally, TP Guia and TP Ghie had set series of dialogues to enlighten everyone about Dengue. Through dissemination of right information, RCSPS and RCPC, as sister clubs, indeed serve as catalysts in the prevention with activism among our colleagues, constituents, and community.
