RCSPS Celebrates World Heritage Day

World Heritage Day is celebrated every year, on the 18th day of April, to raise awareness about preserving human heritage and the diversity and vulnerability of the world’s built monuments and heritage sites.

It was proposed by the International Council on Monuments and Sites on April 18, 1982, and was approved by the General Assembly of UNESCO on 1983. This day gives us an opportunity to conserve and preserve our heritage culture which paves an ancient importance. This event has an outstanding universal value.

And since worldwide efforts are being centered on protecting and conserving these treasures, the Rotary Club of San Pedro South (RCSPS), under Rotary International District (RID) 3820, has been celebrating this event thru Information Drive every year. In fact, videos like https://youtu.be/XM7-nL73NXk were being done by Transforming President (TP) Guia Lopez de Leon and all RCSPS members to be able take everyone virtually to their favorite places in the world. TP Guia even launched an online contest to guess at least 12 Heritage Sites in the RCSPS video. At least five lucky persons with the correct answers were able to receive a surprise GCash gift.

Accordingly, the theme for World Heritage Day 2021 is “Complex Pasts: Diverse Futures.” The aim is to promote awareness about the diversity of cultural heritage of humanity, their vulnerability, and the efforts required for their protection and conservation.

This year, TP Guia was also part of the Gawad Laguna, Incorporated’s interview to TP BJ Borja of the Rotary Club of Metro Binan of RID 3820. As the Head of Binan City, Culture, History, Arts and Tourism Office (BCCHATO), TP Borja was able to achieve numerous milestones, most especially in instilling the essence of Binan’s colorful history to the minds of their constituents.

Even amidst this current worldwide health crisis, TP Guia, President-Elect Mabeh Matienzo of the Rotaract Club of San Pedro South, and TP Jiro Lizarda of Interact Adelina 1 National High School were able to participate in the “City Lights” Project of the Rotaract Club of Ramanujan College. The team highlighted in their videos the beauty and essence of Manila, Palawan, and Cebu to several foreign Rotary and Rotaract Clubs.

Finally, as quoted on UNESCO’s World Heritage site, everyone can work together to “encourage international cooperation in the conservation of our world’s cultural and natural heritage” to preserve the world at present and for future generations.
