“The Best of Times …”

This article is written as a testament to SAG Fed Sapitan of RC Las Piñas Camino Real, who passed away last May 7, 2020.  Many Rotarians have come forth with wonderful testaments to good hearted Rotarian gone too soon.  May he rest in peace.

With apologies to Charles Dickens, I would like to paraphrase a line from “A Tale of Two Cities” — these are the worst of times; these are the best of times.

The current Wuhan Virus pandemic brought us the worst of times. But it is at times like these that bring out the best of man. As what happened to a group of Rotarians from D3830.

It all started when SAG Fed Sapitan of RC Las Pinas Camino Real, through the prodding of PDG Sid Garcia of RC Makati, linked up with Ms. Annie Misa, a friend of spouse Tesha Garcia. Together with other rotarians like PP Federico “Boy” Sevilla of RC Makati North and PP Nanette Aseniero of RC Makati Bel-Air and some other non-Rotarian volunteers, the group ventured into an activity dubbed as “PPE Bayanihan Project” that would help alleviate the acute shortage of Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs) which has caused the untimely demise of many frontliners in hospitals such as doctors, nurses and other medical workers.

Initially, the group chose to donate sets of PPEs made up of a Jumpsuit, face shields and face masks to the Marinduque General Hospital. Another shipment of 1000 face masks and 2 thermal scanners were also donated to the PGH and the National Institute of Mental Health.

In all, contributions to the PPE Bayanihan Project of RC Las Pinas Camino Real amounted to more than P160,000.00 which include:

● Two temperature scanners
● 1000 face masks
● 1500 yards of water repellant fabrics
● 200 yards of garters
● 1500 yards of zippers
● 100 square meters of foam
● 500 pcs of acetate plastic for face shields

The raw materials were turned over to the home-based sewers and cutters in Guiguinto and Baliwag, Bulacan, to be made into Hazmat Overalls (jumpsuits), Face Shields and Isolation Gowns. These also provide the sewers and cutters the necessary livelihood assistance in this time of Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).

Donations are still being accepted to help the group achieve its goal of making 10,000 assorted PPEs by the end of May.
