RCSPS Celebrates World AIDS Day 2020

Do you know the difference between sexual orientations, genders, identities, and expressions?

Last December 1, Transforming President Guia Lopez de Leon of the Rotary Club of San Pedro South (RCSPS) just learned that (and many more) as she was invited to commemorate World AIDS Day with the Malabon Youth Development Unit.

Its Local Youth Development Council thoroughly discussed the history, current status, misconceptions, prevention and the nitty gritty details about AIDS.

Accordingly, Acquired ImmunoDeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic, potentially life-threatening condition caused by the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). HIV spreads when infected blood, vaginal fluids or semen enter the body.

By damaging the immune system, HIV interferes with the body’s ability to fight infection and disease. The symptoms can be mild at first. Hence, people with HIV might not know they are infected.

As long as the 1920’s, scientists suspect that the Simian Immunodeficiency Virus (SIV) jumped from chimps to humans when people consumed chimpanzee meat containing the virus.

At the start of the webinar, some local celebrities read “confessions of the patients.” This was heartbreaking as the patients confessed more of the stigma than the pain itself. The programme was well thought of. Yes, this is another burden. HIV and AIDS medications can be expensive, and must be detected early on. Fortunately, the Malabon Youth Development Unit and RCSPS both offer free HIV testing.
For those interested, RCSPS is offering free testing to be done in a safe and secured place. Yes, with free transportation and meals. Contact President Guia at 09566176917 for more details.

This very relevant webinar was in partnership with The Red Whistle.
