D3800 Zone 8 TPs Engage in a Novel Service Project in an Attempt to Help Students Brave the Pandemic

All the clubs were mandated to aid as COVID-19 razed the country. The Zone 8 Transforming Presidents of D3800, however, refused to follow the observable trends in the service projects at the start of the Rotary Year, and reflected how to create a better impact.

Through a community assessment and close consultation with our educators, the Zone 8 TPs decided to provide 70 units of tablets (with PhP300 monthly Internet loads) to select students among 10 public schools in Mandaluyong.

What made this project more unique, and providing greater impact, was that each tablet was complemented with monthly mobile load. This is being cognizant that Internet is a major enabler right now, and having no access to this made learning experience for our students more difficult. This is another problem that the Zone 8 TPs would like to address.

Aside from addressing the Area of Focus of Basic Education and Literacy, the Project also helps ease the minds and burdens of the parents of the students in providing internet connectivity and tablet devices; thereby, promoting mental health wellness and peace and conflict prevention.  Public image mileage for Rotary will be increased among the students as each digital tablet given to them for their use carries the logo Rotary. They were also given other materials that showcase Rotary.

This project is sustainable and can be replicated in other schools in other communities.  The use of the digital tablet may last for more than a year and the Internet connection through the prepaid card is intended to cover the whole school year. TP Jake shared that he even mentioned this to other organizations and they got inspired with this project and cascaded modified versions of this digital lifeline. Even D3800 district leaders saw the wisdom in the project that Governor Tonipi requested TP Jake to lead a modified district-wide campaign.

Moreover, from recent assessment of the cost-savings made by the Zone 8 clubs, additional 40 tablets were acquired. These units are to be distributed by the end of this Rotary Year to the selected schools in Mandaluyong.  This will now be a total of 110 units that is funded through a D3800 district grant. This project is being participated by RC Mandaluyong Uptown (lead club), RC ManPaSan, RC Greater Mandaluyong, RC Mandaluyong Central, RC Mandaluyong, RC Wack Wack, RC Mandaluyong East, RC Mandaluyong North, RC Mandaluyong West, and Mandaluyong Premier.

All the TPs, and some members, worked closely to arrange the logistics (while having fun) in making this project a reality.
