Last December 2021, Typhoon Odette brought tremendous destruction to the island of Siargao, located in the province of Surigao del Norte. In response to this natural disaster, a multi-pronged response undertaken by the local government, the church, the Department of Labor and the Technical Education and Skills Development Agency (TESDA) together with Rotary dubbed Ahon Siargao Assistance Program or ASAP, was launched to uplift the quality of life on the island. In a tribute to an outstanding Rotarian and Olympian, Rafael “Paing” Hechanova, the Rotary Club of Makati launched the Paing Hechanova Youth Leadership Awards 2023 (PHYLA) last July 7, 2023. It is a nationwide search for outstanding youth leaders who will be nominated by Rotary Clubs. These youth leaders must demonstrate extraordinary leadership skills in projects in any of RI’s seven areas of focus — Peace and Conflict Resolution, Water and Sanitation, Basic Education and Literacy, Disease Prevention and Treatment, Economic and Community Development, Maternal and Child Care, and Environmental Protection, and in addition, Sports.
