RCSPS Celebrates Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021 with RAGMHH

Menstrual health is a human right. Yet, as highlighted by the United Nations (UN), menstruation can result in discrimination, stigma and exclusion against women and girls. Lack of resources and poverty, especially of the Developing Countries, make menstruation and health management even more challenging. In fact, this COVID-19 pandemic made things even more difficult than before.

Fortunately, Rotary International has approved a new Action Group on Menstrual Health and Hygiene. And Transforming President (TP) Guia de Leon of the Rotary Club of San Pedro South (RCSPS), under Rotary International District 3820, is joining fellow Rotarians across the globe in celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day 2021.

Trivia: This year’s theme is “Action and Investment in Menstrual Hygiene and Health.” Did you know why Menstrual Hygiene Day is observed on May 28? This is because menstrual cycles average 28 days in length and people menstruate an average of five days each month, and May is the fifth month of the year.

Rotary International District 5960 featured last May 28 the initiatives of the Rotary Action Group on Menstrual Health and Hygiene (RAGMHH). The event was sponsored by the Rotary Clubs of Accra – Airport, Accra Airport City, Accra – Spintex, Accra – East, Tema – Sakumono, Accra – Osu re, Tema – Community 25 and the Rotaract Club of Accra – Adenta Central. Global Communities Partners for Good and Unilever also supported this advocacy.

Denise Klischan discussed the “RAGMHH Overview and Mission.” She serves as the Secretary of RAGMHH. Meanwhile, Deb Nygaard talked about “Days for Girls Service Project.” She is the President of Roseville Rotary, the Regional Director for North America of RAGMHH, and Days for Girls Team Leader.

Another speaker, Dr. Param Saini, talked about “Bringing Empowerment to Women Through Menstrual Hygiene.” She is the “GIFT 4 Change” Director, and a Past Rotary President and Assistant Governor.

Also joining the panel discussion was Aanne Atomssa for the “Hygiene Kit Distribution and Training.” She is a Roseville Rotarian/Humanitarian. She works for Alight, serving the refugees worldwide.

Finally, there are plenty of ways to get involved. After all, as Rotarians, this crusade is definitely touching the seven areas of focus, most especially the Maternal and Childcare and Economic and Community Development. Together, all the present Rotarians in the panel discussion sincerely appreciated the initiative. Kudos!
