RC Bongao (D3850) president Richard Nami Muallil receives DOST NRCP Lifetime Achievement Award 2022

Congratulations to Rotary Club of Bongao (D3850) president Richard Nami Muallil, DOST NRCP Lifetime Achievement Award 2022 for Division V – Biological Science.

On March 10, 2023, the said award was conferred to Prof. Muallil by NRCP or the National Research Council of the Philippines, which is One of the four councils of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Professor Richard Muallil is the Director for Continuing Education and Extension Services at the Mindanao State University–Tawi-Tawi College of Technology and Oceanography (MSU-TCTO).

His interests include small-scale fisheries, coastal resource management (CRM) and climate change particularly on how it impacts the coastal ecosystems. He was awarded the Most Outstanding PhD Graduate and Dr. Edgardo D. Gomez award by the College of Science, UP Diliman in 2015. He was also awarded Outstanding Young Scientist for Marine Science by the DOST-NAST and Ten Outstanding Young Men (TOYM) for Marine Science and Conservation by JCI Philippines. Dr. Muallil has been involved in CRM-related activities in about a hundred coastal municipalities/cities in the Philippines.

He has close to a hundred scientific publications including research articles, book chapters, manuals, etc. He has been invited as plenary/resource speaker in various conferences and workshops all over the country including abroad.
Realizing the need for marine scientists in his home province, he joined MSU-TCTO right after graduation and focused his works in that remote and seemingly neglected area.

By working closely with the local communities, two marine protected areas (MPA) in Tawi-Tawi were recognized as among the best MPAs in the country! He is active in organizing scientific workshops/conferences and bringing R&D projects through collaborations with prestigious universities in the country. He serves as member of the scientific advisory group for Fisheries Management Areas 3 and 4 of BFAR and member of the National Panel of Technical Experts of the Climate Change Commission among others.

The NRCP Achievement Award is the highest recognition bestowed by the Council on its members whose works greatly contributed to the advancement of their respective fields of expertise and have helped provide solutions to the needs and challenges of the industries./DOST/NCRP
